Electrical Compliance & Repair Process – What You Need to Know

By law, electricians are not allowed to issue an Electrical Certificate of Compliance (CoC) if your installation has any non-compliant or unsafe components. If any issues are found during the inspection, you'll receive a detailed quotation so you can decide whether you'd like to proceed with the necessary repairs.

👉 Please note: If you choose not to go ahead with the repairs, the standard inspection fee of R850 (excluding VAT) still applies. Unfortunately, no compliance certificate can be issued without completing the required work, as doing so would be illegal.

Key Components of Issuing a Certificate of Compliance;

Electrical Faults: What Homeowners Need to Know

Electrical issues in the home are more than just an inconvenience — they can pose serious safety risks and even lead to increased electricity costs. Whether you suspect a faulty appliance or an issue within your home’s electrical system, it’s important to act quickly and understand the potential impact.

🔍 Common Signs of an Electrical Fault

Watch out for the following warning signs that may indicate an electrical problem:

  • Frequent circuit breaker trips or blown fuses
  • Buzzing or crackling sounds from outlets, switches, or appliances
  • Burning smells or discolored power points
  • Lights that flicker or dim, especially when using other appliances
  • Hot outlets, switches, or appliance plugs
  • Sparking when plugging in or unplugging devices
  • Electrical shocks when touching appliances or switches

💡 Can an Electrical Issue Increase Your Electricity Bill?

Yes — both faulty appliances and electrical faults can lead to higher electricity bills. Here’s how:

Electrical Faults May:

  • Cause energy losses through heat in damaged wiring

  • Create ongoing power drain due to arcing or grounding issues

  • Leave circuits unintentionally active (e.g., lights or fans left running unnoticed)

  • Lead to voltage fluctuations that affect appliance performance

If your electricity bill has increased suddenly with no major changes in your usage, a hidden fault or faulty appliance may be the cause.
